Quarter 3

Goat- eye disection

What was the activity?

The activity was dissecting a goat’s eye ball. We first started this whole thing about eyes by learning about the brain then from the brain we learnt about the eye, because our eyes are connected to our brain. We read and took a lot of notes about the eye we even made an eye diagram and it showed all the eye parts. After learning all about the eye Mrs. Zahid decided to give us a chance to have a non-forgettable experience which was dissecting a goat’s eye. I was disgusted throughout the whole time while dissecting but it became a little bit better and I actually felt it once or twice, but my partner did most of the cutting and opening and stuff. Yes I was disgusted but I did enjoy it, it was fun. It was fun actually seeing the things we learnt about and it was my first time to like actually see a whole eye.

What was the purpose?

The purpose of this activity was so that we can have a non-forgettable experience, and honestly we did. We learnt all about the eye but I think after this experience were going to remember all about the eye for a way longer time than if we had just learnt about the eye.

What did you learn?

At first I was very disgusted to do this experiment and until today even now after done the experiment I still have this sick feeling in my stomach every time I remember it, when we first got the eyeball I thought that I was going to barf and I was almost going to, but I didn’t, after a while I got used to it a little bit and things got better for me, so what I learned is a lot but one thing that I thought was important is that I learned I shouldn’t judge something before trying it because like after all it wasn’t that bad. Some other things I learnt were like all about the eye and actually got to see the things we learnt about like the retina, cornea, iris, tapetum, and so on. So I learnt my lesson about not judging something before trying it and I learnt all about the eye. Pretty disgusting but also pretty fun and interesting.

How could I have done this differently or better?

Well everything went very well except me being very disgusted so what I think I could have done differently or better is not judge something before I try it. For example I shouldn’t have got really disgusted, but it wasn’t me it was my stomach!

How does this relate to your goal?

This activity does not relate to my goal for this year because my goal for this year is to not get lower than a (c-) in all four quarters of the year in math.

Quarter 3

Being judged-

It was very exciting getting judged. All three of us, Nader, Yasser and I decided to wear blue which was also our board display color because we thought it would maybe catch our judge’s attention. Mrs.Zahid always told us ‘first impression is very important” and also in this kind of situation like in a science fair you should look good. It was nice presenting to the judge and seeing if they enjoyed it or not, but in the end it was a little bit tiring because we had to keep on repeating our speech over and over again to several people.

Speaking-

As I mentioned before, it was a little bit tiring because we had to keep on repeating the same thing to several people and our speech was pretty long. So we can make sure we wouldn’t mess up and be organized we made cue cards (before the science fair) that had what each one of us was going to say. We memorized our cue cards and when it came time for presenting we knew what we had to say and we said it by order, loud, and clear. Even lots of people and even some of the judges mentioned that we were very organized.

Your display-

We worked hard on our display because it wasn’t only the information you had, how it looked was also very important. For our display we didn’t just randomly pick any colors to put on our board, we thought of the colors all three of us liked and maybe were even our favorite and put on the board. I think we did well on our display because we included everything that had to be on there, we had matching colors like blue and black on the board and the display was eye catching.

Judging others-

It was a change, instead of you just being judged and maybe complaining “well why did they give us a bad grade on this” and so on, you get the chance to actually learn something new and think like a judge, it was a new experience which was pretty nice.

Quarter 2

What was the activity?

The activity was that we had to pick a medicine that we were interested to learn about or like a medicine that was important to you and your family members for example or like just a medicine that you were curious to learn about. After you picked your medicine you had to research about it because you had to do a fact sheet and in the fact sheet there were some questions that we had to answer and to know the answers you had to research and find some information about the medicine you were doing. We were also required to present our project which was considered the oral presentation and finally the model medicine which is the model of the medicine. To build the model of my medicine which was panadol I used Styrofoam balls and barbeque stick. In my model I used red balls to represent oxygen blue balls to represent nitrogen black balls to represent carbon and white balls to represent hydrogen. When Mrs. Zahid graded us she graded us on the oral presentation the model medicine and the fact sheet.

What was the purpose?

The purpose of this activity was to do something new and fun in science and something that interested everyone knowing that we were going to build a model so it was a fun project. Another purpose is that so like we can learn about the medicine that we use a lot in our daily life or is important to our family or it just interested you. So you either learned about a medicine you use a lot which is my case or something you were interested to learn about and you did learn it.

What do you learn?

I learned a lot of things for example like: information about panadol, how to build a model of panadol, and I also learned how to become better at speaking in front of a class.

How could you have done it differently or better?

I think the only think I could have done differently so it can become better is make my model medicine more stable because it was loose and falling apart but it was fine when I represented it to the class but it wasn’t stable enough to hang it on the ceiling of the class because it was going to be loose. And maybe another small thing I could have changed is my poster that had my fact sheet, maybe I would add a little bit more color or something so it can look more attractive but I don’t think it affected my grade in any way.

How does this relate to your goal for this year?

Well this goal doesn’t really relate to my goal for this year because my goal for this year is not be impulsive and doing this project had nothing to do with being impulsive or like keeping control or not calling out.

Quarter 1

Element project

For this reflection I’m going to be reflecting on an element poster that I did for science class. This poster was given to us during our school closure because of swine flu. But while our school was closed we had virtual school which was school on the internet. The instructions were given to us on blackboard (the school site where we got all our work for every class during virtual school). The instructions were self-explanatory, clear, and u did not really need to ask questions after you read it. The project was that we had to keep in mind our birthday then we had to find the atom that had our birthday. For example my birthday is on the 8th so when I looked for the atom with the number 8 it was oxygen. Then I had to do a small diagram of the atom and right beside it an element fact sheet which was just information about our atom. This was due on Tuesday in the first week we went back to school.

Before our school got closed in science class we were already learning about atoms. So during virtual school obviously Mrs. Zahid was not going to give us a lesson through the internet. So she gave us a project to do about atoms because we had already learned about it in school. So I think it was easy for all of us as well as for me. So like the purpose of this was to learn more about the atom that had something in common with you which was your birthday. It was interesting so we enjoyed doing it and learn something new.

Well I learned about the atom I did but also other than what I learned from the project I learned a lot from virtual school. First I’m going to start by saying what I learned from doing the project: first I learned that oxygen is my atom like I mean its number 8 like my birthday, its special properties, its nonmetal, it’s a solid, liquid, or gas at room temperature, I learned it substance found in everyday life, how many electrons does it gain or lose when it become an ion, and what is the overall change.

Well I don’t how I could have done this differently or better because I got a 95% on it and the 5% I missed was because I just did not write oxygen= number 8. Either than that it was totally fine maybe I should have been more creative a little bit because my poster was very plane.

Well this activity does a little bit relate to my goal because my goal for this year is not to be impulsive and this project was done in virtual school so I had to think before I would ask any question on an email and then send it to Mrs. Zahid when I could have answered the questions myself.
